Computers and E-commerce Web Sites If you have tried to visit and contact another fire/EMS department and their web site didn't exist, was off-line, or didn't give you the information you need, or means to contact them, then you know exactly what we mean when we say there is a major problem throughout the fire service. And as we know, all volunteer departments do not have members at the station 24/7 and certainly during business hours, when government agencies and private donators try to contact them. Too often when we and others try to visit a web site of a fire or EMS department, we find one or more of the following:
This is a huge problem for every fire/EMS department. Like any other business, even volunteer, combined and EMS departments are growing more dependent upon computers and web technologies on a daily basis. This is true if you need to file for a grant on-line, or you are seeking other form of financing or donations and the finance company or donating company needs information or wishes to contact you through your web site. In short, if your site isn't professional, functional and others can use it to contact you and get a response . . . YOU LOSE! As personal computers and web sites have grown in use over the past couple of decades, the need for volunteer fire departments to embrace and use these technologies has grown as well. Unfortunately very few volunteer departments have members with the general PC programming and installation knowledge and skills necessary, MBA degrees, or computer science degrees or MCSE certificates to meet the ever evolving demands.
